Urban Regeneration

Urban regeneration transforms underutilized industrial, commercial, or residential areas into vibrant mixed-use districts that serve contemporary social, economic, and environmental needs. At atelier ribo+, we approach urban regeneration as both a technical challenge and a civic responsibility—creating places where communities can thrive.

What We Do

Our Approach

Every territory has a story. Our re.late principle guides us to understand the historical, social, and economic forces that shaped a place before proposing its transformation. Through re.veal, we identify latent qualities—existing buildings worth preserving, community assets to enhance, ecological systems to restore. Finally, re.shape defines interventions that honor context while enabling new possibilities.

Urban regeneration succeeds when it creates value for all stakeholders: residents who gain quality public spaces, businesses that find productive environments, and cities that recover underperforming assets. We measure success not just in square meters delivered, but in the vitality of the communities that emerge.

Case Study: Innovation Factory Losone

The Innovation Factory Losone demonstrates our approach to urban regeneration in practice. This former industrial complex in Ticino sat underutilized for years—a relic of manufacturing activity that had moved elsewhere. Working with local authorities and stakeholders, we developed a vision for transformation.

The Challenge

A 12,000 m² industrial site with significant existing structures, environmental remediation needs, and complex ownership patterns. The municipality sought economic activation while preserving industrial heritage and creating public amenities.

Our Solution

Rather than demolition, we proposed adaptive reuse of key structures combined with strategic new construction. The masterplan created a mix of creative industry workspaces, maker facilities, food and beverage venues, and public gathering spaces. Existing industrial architecture was celebrated rather than hidden.

Frequently Asked Questions

What types of sites are suitable for urban regeneration?

Urban regeneration applies to former industrial zones, underperforming commercial areas, obsolete infrastructure (railways, ports), military installations, and large residential estates requiring renewal. The common thread is significant existing development that no longer serves contemporary needs.

How long does an urban regeneration project typically take?

Timelines vary significantly based on site complexity, regulatory context, and stakeholder alignment. Simple projects may complete in 3-5 years; complex territorial regenerations often span 10-15 years from initial vision through full implementation. We help clients establish realistic phasing strategies.

What makes atelier ribo+ approach distinctive?

Three elements distinguish our practice: First, genuine integration of landscape thinking from project inception—not as decoration, but as structuring principle. Second, our Swiss-Portuguese perspective brings both precision and creative flexibility. Third, our 25+ years of experience means we have navigated complex approvals and stakeholder dynamics many times.

Do you work outside Switzerland?

Yes. While our headquarters is in Ticino, we have offices in Geneva, Zurich, and Portugal's Douro Valley. We undertake projects across Europe, particularly in contexts where our regeneration expertise and multilingual capabilities add value.
